Over the course of his long life he taught at five universities. From 1950 to 1967 he taught at Cambridge University, where he was promoted from Readership to Fellowship in 1957 and from Professor to Emeritus Professor in 1967. From 1967 to 1983 he was a Senior Fellow at the University of Manchester, where he served as Dean of the Faculty of English. From 1967 to 1984 he was also a Fellow at Girton College, Cambridge. In 1983, he returned to Cambridge as a Senior Fellow at King's College and later, from 1990 to 1995, held the Head of English Fellowship at Peterhouse.
As a scholar, Redfern was a pioneer of the early stages of structuralism and post-structuralism in the English-speaking world. His work on the theory and criticism of modern fiction (including Paul Valéry and Marcel Proust) was especially important. He published, with Terence Hawkes, a four-volume selection of Marcel Proust's work (1971–1988), an edition of "The Early Poems and Plays of Paul Valéry" (1931–1945, 1971), and a selection of essays by Valéry (1971). His critical writings were collected in three volumes of essay collections: "The Body and the Text" (1969), "The Language of Fiction" (1974), and "Modern Fiction" (1985). He wrote a book on the French writer Jean Paul, "Jean Paul" (1959) and a book on Italian Renaissance literature "The Italian Renaissance: An Artistic and Cultural History" (1966), as well as a book on Italian Renaissance landscape painting, "Landscape in Italy and the Veneto, 1495–1525" (1980).
In 1970 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and in 1985 a Fellow of the British Academy. He was appointed CBE in 1973, and was knighted in 1990.
In 1988 he was given a Doctorate of Letters honoris causa by the University of Cambridge for his "many valuable and influential books." He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Academy of Italy in 1991.
He was married twice, firstly to Eleanor Elizabeth Edmonds (1917–1995), and secondly to Rosalind Victoria Blunt (1922–2016). His two children, Sandra and Jonathan, are both writers.
