Flash 10 (11) is the last version to offer full support for new platforms, and is also the last version with a built-in /system directory. From Flash 11 (12), /system is completely gone and Flash directly loads the user-space shared object, and no longer uses a /system directory. From Flash 13 (14), /system is removed completely and the user-space shared object is loaded from the /Applications/Flash 11.4 Shared Library/plugin.xml file.
In all versions prior to 13, the /system directory always held files for the kernel extensions, and as Flash is a 32-bit application, had to use kernel extensions to use files in /system. Flash 13 (14) is the first version to put the kernel extensions in /system, using a special construct to allow multiple kernel extensions to share the same directory, and they can all be loaded at the same time.
In Mac OS X, the kernel extensions are loaded at boot, and their shared objects are loaded after the system has booted. They are unloadable at any time and are not autoloaded as they are loaded at boot time.
But the lack of a robust toolchain to remove graphics and animation content from Flash has been holding these efforts back; the GFWL-specific tools don't run on Windows; and there was no effective way to import content into said tools (content created by third parties has to be manually converted to the new format), or even to render content created in Flash with the same fidelity as in-browser use.
I think this is mostly because to create canvas games you need to write programs, not just use the tools to create graphics and animations. The only way to do that is to actually write code.
There are no guarantees any more for Flash games or animations to work with the current Flash plugin, they may or may not run. If you need to support a specific Flash game or animation, and it is still available, you can still use an old version of this plugin, and your game will still work, but the new plugin is recommended.
It is also possible to run Adobe Flash content in an HTML5 sandbox designed to create a similar experience in a browser without Flash, but the impact of that approach, while it may allow Flash games and animations to be enjoyed across a wider range of platforms, and can also be used to host and distribute Flash content more securely, is still less than ideal; you can find out more here .
I'm personally quite amazed by the speed of progress, and am looking forward to a future where all Flash content will be able to be run seamlessly on any modern operating system. As a community, we have a lot of work to do to achieve that goal, but we're well on our way.
