Like many other things in medicine, there is often no single, best treatment for any single subject. Instead, a doctor can use individual methods to produce a particular result and, with experience, select treatments that work best for particular circumstances.

Treatment decisions are then based on one's best estimate of how much pain is likely and the most appropriate treatment to address each of those concerns. This scenario can lead to making a treatment plan that may not maximize patient comfort or overall successful outcome.

Because dental procedures may invasively involve the mouth, it may not be felt to be a subject that might lend itself to acupuncture. However, in a field that is so focused on pain management, it seems likely that such science would be included in any accessible acupuncture curriculum. Thus, it would be expected that there is a body of literature available on the issues.

Fortunately, there is an extensive body of research on acupuncture in dentistry, most of which suggests that it is very successful in alleviating pain. In addition, it appears to have a positive effect on other ailments, such as periodontal disease.

A recent example is a case report published in the Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in April 2011. In it, the authors reviewed the relevant literature and presented seven cases of periapical curettage in which acupuncture was used along with oral NSAID therapy in patients who were sensitive to NSAIDs due to peptic ulcer disease. In all seven cases, the authors found significant improvement in tooth sensitivity and periapical pain.

As is always true with any new approach, however, this is an exceedingly small sample, and a strategy that works in one patient with a given condition may not translate to a patient with the same condition. d2c66b5586
