RailWorks 3 - West Coast Main Line North Torrent

On arrival the route continues through the suburbs of Preston, passing through the historic suburb of Chorleywood, and the Huddersfield Narrows to Chorleywood Junction, near to Huddersfield, where trains continue north past the magnificent dam and suspension bridge at Arkengarthdale, to cross over the River Calder into the country beyond. The route continues through a significant industrial site for the plant growing of kiwifruit, producing a large proportion of the UK's crop. Before crossing the River Ribble, the route passes through the sharply rolling countryside of Lancashire, which becomes more peaceful and rural as it reaches more of the southern shores of the Fylde coast.

Arriving in more rural surroundings, the route crosses the River Ribble, and once over begins taper down into the coastal plains of North Lancashire. Here you cross over the mouth of Preston Airport, and into the area known as the Ribble Valley, before entering the tranquil, rolling farmland of Clitheroe and the Cumbrian border, while to the west the route passes over the beautifully situated Priestwood Viaduct, marking the point at which the West Coast Main Line meets the West Coast Main Line. Crossing the Pennines and entering a largely rural Lancaster, the route has to contend with a significant route engineering challenge, as it crosses Gressock Viaduct, before passing through Chartist country and back towards the Manchester/Liverpool heartland.

Arriving at the city of Preston, the route reverts to the industrial past of the WCML, where the vast west coaste line departs "straight on to Scotland" as the goods numbers cars heads out of Chorleywood Junction towards Huddersfield. The route crosses the River Ribble, and enters a significant industrialised area, ranging from small and medium size manufacturers and car production facilities. Overcoming the stunning Grade II listed Chorleywood Tunnel, the route heads towards to the east of Preston to Crossens, where trains cross the River Ribble, via Codling Viaduct, and heads towards Morecambe Bay. d2c66b5586
