The player characters are mages that are trying to rid themselves of the Exarch Tetrayan as the cause of their troubles. They must find a way to (non-violently) overthrow the Exarch and free everyone that is under their control. The Exarchs are suppressing the knowledge of magic to keep the Fallen World from becoming aware of its true nature, and the ultimate result is that the Fallen World is ruled by a bunch of corrupt and evil mages. The PCs are the only ones with the ability to fight back; the mages are too corrupted by the Exarch to truly oppose them.
The falling of the Supernal Realms was one of the first things that humans learned about magic. The Supernal Realms were a powerful system of magic which ruled the world. These mage-ruled realms have been lost to the Fallen World for over a millennium, and the story of Atlantis was just that - a story. It was a story that was told, at least in part, to frighten impressionable young peoples and to teach them that magic was dangerous and should be avoided.
The most important thing to keep in mind about the origin of magic is that there are no gods. Magic is the mechanism by which the Exarchs exert their will on reality. This is the most dangerous contradiction of the whole concept of the Supernal Realms (and the Chronicles of Darkness), which is that the essence of magic is an illusion, a facade, an attempt at hiding the true nature of the existence of the world. Mages can (and do) try to hide the truth of magic behind a façade of scientific explanation, but they can never escape the truth, no matter how much they try to hide it or deny it.
The game has been followed by several other games published by White Wolf, namely Mage: the Ascension (January 1, 2007), Mage: the Awakening 2nd Edition (March 10, 2007), and Vampire: the Masquerade - Redemption (April 28, 2007).
