More than 7 in 10 (71%) Americans believe the United States should continue its current policy of support for Israel, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll. The vast majority (89%) of Jewish Americans support the policy, and nearly identical numbers (79%) of evangelical Christians feel the same way. Support for the policy is down sharply among those who identify themselves as liberal or moderate (59%) and younger (72%) Democrats. They are now more likely than their older, conservative counterparts to oppose the policy (50% vs. 34%). Despite public backlash against the policy, President Obama is unlikely to make any changes in his Israel policy this week as he kicks off a Middle East trip. But the president is expected to address the issue in his speech to the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, scheduled to take place Thursday evening in Washington, D.C. Here are some other takeaways from the poll:Obama's favorability rating among registered voters is a relatively modest 48% positive, 47% negative. Among Democrats, however, 62% are positive and only 12% negative. Self-identified liberals, moderates and Democrats under 50 all rate the president more positively than they do Republicans or conservatives. Republicans/conservative Democrats are an exception: Only 37% have a positive view. Consider the following: - 68% of Democrats approve of the way Obama is handling the economy; only 14% disapprove. Among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, just 14% approve and 79% disapprove.- About as many Democrats (54%) as Republicans (53%) approve of Obama's handling of the federal budget deficit.- By a 16-point margin (43% to 27%), more Democrats say that the country is better off than it was eight years ago.- 59% of Democrats say the country is headed in the right direction, up 5 points since last December.- 48% of Democrats think the economy is getting better; only 26% say it is getting worse.- A 52% majority of Democrats say the economy will get better over the next two years, while only 33% believe it will get worse.- 53% of Democrats think the country is moving in the right direction, up from 40% last year.- 49% of Democrats say the country is headed in the right direction, up from 37% last year. 827ec27edc
